First step in handing over assets to council
A HISTORIC moment took place in St Austell last week when the first steps towards handing control of a number of the town’s car parks over to the town council were taken.
Mayor of St Austell councillor Jackie Bull alongside councillor Tom French have signed the town council’s Car Park Order in preparation for Priory and Tregonissey Lane End Car Parks to transfer over on April 1.
This is part of a major devolution package which has seen Cornwall Council offload a range of services to the town council over an 18 month period.
The town council has reduced the car park charges for up to three and four hours, are introducing a season ticket scheme and free parking after 7pm.
Priory Car Park costs £1 for up to an hour, which will remain the same as will the 1 to 2 hour charge at £1.60.
Two to three hours will be reduced from £3.20 to £3 and three to four hours will cost £4.80 - a 40p reduction from the current £5.20 tariff.
All other charges will remain the same.
Town council clerk, David Pooley, said: “This is a critical part of the package of services agreed with Cornwall Council and will give local town councillors the opportunity to control and influence this very important service.
“Our grounds maintenance team are on standby to tidy up the flower beds in and around the car park to compliment the work already carried out throughout the town as soon as it transfers to us.”
Anyone wishing to purchase a season ticket for Priory Car Park at a cost of £135 per quarter can get hold of an application form from the town council’s website or call 01726 829859.
