Daredevil Eddie ‘the Eagle’ lands at Eden

A true British sporting legend soared into Eden last week as none other than former Olympic ski jumper Eddie “the Eagle” Edwards popped into put some of their scariest new adventure equipment through its paces.

Eddie found worldwide fame at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics  where he captured the world’s imagination as he competed in the ski jump, one of the most extreme disciplines in Olympic sport.

Training on a homemade rig in his back garden made Eddie a homegrown hero as he battled both the establishment and the derision of his peers, many wanting him banned not least for the media attention that his DIY exploits attracted. In fact Eddie remains Britain’s most famous Winter Olympian nearly 30 years later.

His exploits attracted Hollywood too with last year’s feel good autobiagraphical movie Eddie the Eagle was released on the big screen starring Taron Egerton, Hugh Jackman and Christopher Walken.

Eddie was at Eden to revive his daredevil exploits by trying out Freefall and Vertigo 360, the two newest attractions at Hangloose Adventure’s complex at the Eden Project.

Hangloose at Eden also operate the Sky Wire, England’s longest and fastest zipwire, Gravity, a giant swing, and The Drop, a freefall simulator off a purpose-built tower.

They also offer a virtual reality experience for people who want to feel the rush of the rides without strapping on a harness.

So without further adieu Ski jump hero Eddie was strapped into a harness and winched up six storeys before being dropped, back-first, on to an enormous inflated air bag – all against the backdrop of Eden’s spectacular Biomes.
