Youth football day success

NEWQUAY Football club opened its gates at Mount Wise and drew crowds of several hundred to enjoy the sunshine and show their support for England as activities across the ground ensured young and old alike were able to exercise and have fun.

Death of Tristan Scott

TRIBUTES have poured in after the sad passing of Tristan Scott, 82, a man who held sport in St Austell close to his heart.
Scott, a former chairman and president of the South Western league and chairman of the Cornwall football association passed away early on Saturday morning.
He started his love affair with football while at St Austell Grammar School and after progressing through the ranks he first made his name in mens football playing for his village side, Bugle.
Scott, continued his association with the club after retiring from the game and spent 16 long years as chairman of the club.

Denzil takes second at Watergate

PAR’S kitesurfing superstar Denzil Williams went desperately close to claiming victory in the opening round of the British course racing championship, finishing a narrowly beaten second at Watergate Bay.
Dorset’s Jason McCaffrey eventually came away with the win after just managing to edge Williams out in the all-important second race, winning by just half a board.
In a closely fought in difficult condition the 15 competitors tried to make the most of the little wind at Watergate and it was another Cornishman who made up the top three, the chairman of the Kernow Kitesurfing club Lee Harvey who finished in third place.

Five star St Blazey

ST BLAZEY produced a five-star performance to brush aside the challenge of lowly Holsworthy on Saturday, hammering the basement boys 5-1, at Blaise Park.
The green and blacks though were not at their best in the first half, although having the more clear cut chances.
With just two minutes on the clock midfielder Jay Isbell failed to connect with a left-wing cross, while Sam Cooper shot just over the bar on 28 minutes.
Danny Zalick had perhaps Blazey’s best chance of the half, firing over Chris Reski’s cross from close range when it looked almost easier to score.
Glynn Hooper’s side did make the breakthrough though before the break when Cooper, fired home from close range after good work down the right by Zalick in the 41st minute.

Clay country thriller

THIS WEEKEND saw clay country throw up one of the best local derbies the region has seen over the past few seasons, as near neighbours St Dennis and Nanpean Rovers played their part in a ten-goal thriller.
The Saints hosted Nanpean at Boscawen Park this Saturday and the two sides produced a classic clash, which eventually led to a 6-4 victory in St Dennis’ favour.

Death of motorcycle ace

Motorcycling fans across the region have learnt about the sad passing of Adrian Kessell, 83, who died peacefully at home on Monday, February 8.
He was born at Whitegates, St Dennis in October 1926 and was the older son of Tommy Kessell, a pre-war motorcycle champion.
In September 1945 Adrian started his racing career in a local meeting riding Tommy’s 1926 Zenith where he came third.
This was the start of an extremely remarkable story that was to span seven decades.
Over sixty years later Adrian was still riding.

Floodlight plan for Poltair Park

ST AUSTELL football club have made their next step towards promotion into the premier division of the Peninusla league after officially applying to install floodlights at the current Poltair Park ground, writes Gareth Rowett.
Vice-chairman Darryl Stamp confirmed to the Voice that the club had applied for new floodlights, which is a stipulation in the league rules for the club to make the step up into the premier division.
He told the Voice: “We aim to progress, if we win the League, to the Premier Division of the Peninsula League.
“To enable us to make this step, we have to have plans submitted to Cornwall Council, which we have recently done, for floodlights. This is a stipulation, within the league rules.
“We have sought professional help for the type of floodlights, and they have been designed to minimise light spillage and pollution in the area. The lights will comprise of six columns at 16m height, three each side of the ground.”

Blazey's striker target

ST BLAZEY’S search for a new striker to replace Daniel Nancarrow may be coming towards an end after the club put in seven days notice of approach for Penzance forward Sam Cooper.
Cooper, formerly of Truro has been potentially lined up by Hooper to strengthen the green and blacks’ attacking options and he is due to hold talks with the striker from today.
Former St Blazey boss Trevor Mewton now with Penzance had alleged that Hooper had illegally approached the 18-year-old forward, who is a member of the British college’s squad.

Lillywhites look to promotion

ST AUSTELL have signaled their intentions to bring South West peninsula premier league football to St Austell after applying for promotion from division one west.
The Lillywhites who climbed to the top of the table with a win over Hayle this weekend decided to apply for promotion at a committee meeting on Thursday night and are set to put in planning permission for floodlights at Poltair Park.
The decision to apply for promotion was unanimously decided at the recent committee meeting and if they can keep up their recent fine form they can look forward to a potential battle with Perranporth for not just the division one west title but also promotion into the premier league.

Players banned until August 2011

Former St Austell Cornwall senior cup winning duo Lee Whetter and Ben Douglas have been banned from the Carlsberg South West peninsula for over 18 months following the fracas which followed the St Austell v Newquay game last October, writes Gareth Rowett.
Whetter and Douglas, who were both banned by St Austell following the incident have had their registrations cancelled by the league and will not be able to play in the peninsula league again until August 1, 2011.
Both were punished with 20 week playing bans and fines by the Cornwall FA, but now the league have acted to punish the pair further.
