Stabbed in the back

ST AUSTELL have sent shockwaves through Cornish football by sacking manager Glyn Rowett after just eight games of the new season, writes Gareth Rowett.
The surprise announcement came with the Senior Cup winners top of division one west and just three days after they suffered only their second defeat of the season, going down 5-2 away at Plymstock United.

Russia call-up for Jay

ST AUSTELL'S teenage hammer throwing sensation Jay Hill is heading to Russia to compete in the European Under 20 club championships.
Alongside team mate Jordan Henwood, the Newquay and Par duo are competing under their second claim club Enfield and Haringey.
Jay,18, recently won the South of England Inter Counties championships and came third in the England Nationals is relishing the opportunity to compete on the big stage and is hopeful of picking up a medal.

Shock death of bowls legend

BOWLS in Stenalees suffered a great loss after the sad passing of former England international and double national championship winner Richard Bray.
Richard, a popular 45-year-old from Stenalees, died after undergoing a major emergency operation at Harefield Hospital.
News of Richard’s death broke at Worthing on Friday as many of his Cornwall county colleagues were gathering at the Beach House Park greens ahead of the Middleton Cup finals, which Cornwall went on to win for the first time, beating Yorkshire 128-103.

Simpson dream over

JEMMA Simpson’s dreams of booking a place in the 800 metre world final are over after finishing fifth in her heat of the world championships’ semi-final.
On the weekend of her club Newquay and Par’s 25th anniversary the Polgooth based runner fell away in the home straight as a place in the final round, which takes place tonight faded away.

Blazey in form for season's start

St Blazey manager Glynn Hooper has his eyes firmly set on the club’s first game of the season as they prepare for a trip to Dartmouth to kick start their new season.
The green and blacks make the 138-mile round trip to Longcross on Saturday and Hooper will be hoping for a similar performance to the one which saw them defeat local rivals St Austell 3-1 in the Phil Smith memorial match.

Jemma in golden form

CHAMPION runner Jemma Simpson is brimming with confidence.
The 25-year-old from Polgooth has had a cracking month, establishing herself as a serious contender for the women's 800m world title.
After three months spent nursing a broken foot, Jemma recovered to take the British women's 800m title at the Aviva World Trials and UK Championships in Birmingham on July 12. Then, last Friday, Cornwall's golden bullet wowed the crowd in London with a convincing victory at the London Grand Prix. Jemma led home British rivals Jenny Meadows and Marilyn Okoro with a winning time of 2:01.08 minutes.

FA moves out of town

AN historic change looks set for the counties football association, who look set to up roots and move to Bodmin from St Austell.
The football association has been based in the town since as long as most of the counties board can remember and moved to their High Cross Street base back in 1997.
New vice-chairman Dave Bray confirmed that the CCFA are hoping to move into their new site at Callywith Gate, Bodmin within the next six weeks.
“It’s an historic change for cornish football, as the secretary up until now has also been based in St Austell,” Bray told the Voice.

Grant's open dream shattered

GRANT Slater's dreams of a place at this year’s Open golf championship were dashed this week after the 23-year-old fractured his ankle the day he found out he was off to take part in a national qualifying tournament at Glasgow golf club.

Slater a winner of the 2003 England boys open championship had shot a fine 70 a week earlier to lie in joint seventh place at a regional qualifying events and, just seven days later he was rushed to Treliske hospitial with a fractured ankle the day he had found he was within one round of taking part in one of golf’s biggest competitions.

Blazey in FA Cup

ST BLAZEY await Wednesday morning's FA Cup draw with some interest after their place in this season's competition was confirmed late on Monday night, writes Gareth Rowett.
Secretary Simon Tonkin received an email confirming the green and blacks place in the extra preliminary round.
Tonkin told the Voice: "I can confirm our acceptance into this season's FA Cup.
"I received an email late on Monday night confirming our application, but I always had a positive feeling about our situation."
The club were given special dispensation to enter the competition despite failing to finish in the top ten of the South West Peninsula Premier division last season.
