ST AUSTELL are up to fourth in the Jolly's Cornwall premier league after a close fought two-wicket victory over Callington.
Following last weekend's success away at reigning champions St Just Sean Hooper's side made it back-to-back victories with a win over the newly promoted side, who currently sit at the bottom of the table.
After bowling Callington out for 107, St Austell chased down their total and made 105 losing eight wickets in the process and despite losing five wickets for just 11 runs Simon Ellison and Liam Watson saw the Wheal Eliza-based side over the line.
Hooper told the Voice: "I am delighted to gain a second win in a row in a game where we had the worst of conditions due to affects of rain during the game.
"We were the only team to win a Premier game batting second so that is a great effort."
Hooper also feels that his side needs to tighten up on their catching and admits that he and others have been guilty of failing to take catches so far this season.
He went on to add: "Batting wise we need others to play to their potential as Dan Jarman is at the moment if we are to be consistently successful but very tough conditions to bat in this weekend.
"We bowled really well early on but let them escape from 70 for 8 to a challenging total of 102.
"Andrew Libby again bowled superbly and Liam Watson produced his best performance since we have been in the Premier League.
"Dan Jarman took five catches which is almost unheard of and the one off Gary Bone was exceptional - full length diving one handed effort.
"Jarman then controlled innings in incredibly testing conditions and partnership of 44 with Jeremy Grigg saw us coasting at 81-3 before a collapse saw us reduced to 92 for 8.
"Simon Ellison and Liam Watson kept their cool to guide us home in a very tense finale."
Hooper's next task is to prepare his side for this Saturday's trip to former club Falmouth and he concluded by saying: "I am looking forward to playing at Falmouth this weekend and to keep improving the team effort and atmosphere has been superb in last two games.
"We have players trying to break in from the seconds who are playing really well at the moment as well as players coming back from injury and football so competition to play in the side is high."
St Austell's match at Falmouth on Saturday starts at 1.30pm.
