Grant's open dream shattered

GRANT Slater's dreams of a place at this year’s Open golf championship were dashed this week after the 23-year-old fractured his ankle the day he found out he was off to take part in a national qualifying tournament at Glasgow golf club.

Slater a winner of the 2003 England boys open championship had shot a fine 70 a week earlier to lie in joint seventh place at a regional qualifying events and, just seven days later he was rushed to Treliske hospitial with a fractured ankle the day he had found he was within one round of taking part in one of golf’s biggest competitions.

“I’m ok just very sore after the operation and from what I gather I’ve fractured my lower leg and ankle and my ankle came out of place so they have put screws in to straighten it out and get my ruptured ligaments back in place,” Slater told the Voice.
“I’m really gutted because I’ve been working really hard on my game and have been starting to get results due to the help of my boss Gary (Lenaghan).
“I found out that day that I had made it through to play at Glasgow Gailes and as hard as it is to be in the four places out of 96 I really fancied my chances as my self confidence is really high after recent results.”

Slater was hoping that he could continue his quest to join Tiger Woods and company in the first round of the world-famous tournament and added: “It’s going be ages now till I can play again.
“I can’t put any weight at all on it for at least six weeks so I can’t even begin to think of all the rehab I am going to have to go through.”
