Former St Austell Cornwall senior cup winning duo Lee Whetter and Ben Douglas have been banned from the Carlsberg South West peninsula for over 18 months following the fracas which followed the St Austell v Newquay game last October, writes Gareth Rowett.Whetter and Douglas, who were both banned by St Austell following the incident have had their registrations cancelled by the league and will not be able to play in the peninsula league again until August 1, 2011.
Both were punished with 20 week playing bans and fines by the Cornwall FA, but now the league have acted to punish the pair further.
At their Thursday board meeting it was unanimously approved to cancel the registrations of both players.
A league statement said: "Under league rule 6.1 it was been decided that the conduct of each of these two players has bought the competition into disrepute and as such the competition has sought and received the approval of the Football Association and the Cornwall County Football Association to implement the league rule in full.
"Therefore neither player will be allowed to participate in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League until the 1st August 2011.
"For the avoidance of doubt this means they will not be allowed to register as a player for any club in this league for the remainder of the 2009/10 season and the whole of the 2010/11 season.
"The two players and the St Austell club have been informed in writing of this decision."
League Chairman, Mark Hayman said that the board of the league wished to make it perfectly clear that it would not shirk in its duty to punish offenders to the full extent of the rules.
"The board also hope that this sends a message to all players in the league that such incidents have no place in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League and that this type of appalling conduct will not be accepted.
"Secretary Philip Hiscox called on all clubs, managers and players to do their upmost to improve discipline for the good of the game and to aid the enjoyment of those that support the league by attending matches."
The league also confirmed that there could be further punishment taken against both clubs but they will not decide on any punishments until Newquay have found out about their appeal against their fine handed out by the Cornish football association.
