Blazey's striker target

News Archive > Sport > Blazey's striker target

Gareth Rowett28/01/2010

Blazey's striker targetST BLAZEY’S search for a new striker to replace Daniel Nancarrow may be coming towards an end after the club put in seven days notice of approach for Penzance forward Sam Cooper.
Cooper, formerly of Truro has been potentially lined up by Hooper to strengthen the green and blacks’ attacking options and he is due to hold talks with the striker from today.
Former St Blazey boss Trevor Mewton now with Penzance had alleged that Hooper had illegally approached the 18-year-old forward, who is a member of the British college’s squad.
But Hooper remains defiant that he has not done anything wrong and that Cooper has made it clear that he is keen to join the green and blacks.
He told the Voice: “I hadn’t chased the lad he has made it very clear that he wants to come to the club and we put seven days in last Wednesday, so from today (Wednesday) we can approach him.
“Trevor (Mewton) seems to think that I was acting underhanded but I can assure him that I haven’t at all
“I really don’t see why he feels that I would go behind his back, considering our long friendship.”
Mewton had alleged that Hooper had illegally approached the teenage striker and said: “I am very unhappy that Sam has had his head turned with what I feel amounts to an illegal approach from St Blazey.
“Having spoken to Glynn (Hooper), I told him there was no way I wanted to release Sam.”
The green and blacks boss is now eagerly anticipating the draw for the quarter-final of the Cornwall senior cup after his side booked their place in the next round with a single-goal victory at Perranporth.
He added: “I thought Perranporth had a real go at us early on and we didn’t really play well, although I don’t think they created any real clear cut chances.
“Our goal on the stroke of half-time certainly changed the game and after a few slight changes at half-time I felt that we controlled the second half and we deservedly won the game.
“Obviously we would like to stay away from a trip to Bodmin in the next round but you certainly wouldn’t want to go to Illogan after their win over Saltash at the weekend.
“For local interest I am sure that St Austell against St Blazey would be a great final, but you never know that tie may pop up in the next round or the semi-final, the main thing is that we are through and we’ll look forward to the next round
