Clay country thriller

THIS WEEKEND saw clay country throw up one of the best local derbies the region has seen over the past few seasons, as near neighbours St Dennis and Nanpean Rovers played their part in a ten-goal thriller. The Saints hosted Nanpean at Boscawen Park this Saturday and the two sides produced a classic clash, which eventually led to a 6-4 victory in St Dennis’ favour.
St Dennis dominated the early proceedings although only managing to establish a one-goal lead through centre-half and captain Nigel White.
After Nanpean’s Dave Hooper had levelled the scores, the home side went in 3-1 up at the break thanks to two quick fire goals from debutant midfielder Ben Douglas.
Ryan Hayhurst thought that he had put the game beyond Nanpean’s reach early in the second half when he made it 4-1.
But a Nanpean side inspired by former St Dennis skipper Hooper fought back to 4-4, with around just ten minutes remaining.
After letting their three-goal lead slip, St Dennis did fight back when Hayhurst and Carl Rickard added further goals in the final ten minutes to allow for Dave Rickard’s side to complete a fine 6-4 victory over their clay country rivals.
