ST BLAZEY produced a five-star performance to brush aside the challenge of lowly Holsworthy on Saturday, hammering the basement boys 5-1, at Blaise Park. The green and blacks though were not at their best in the first half, although having the more clear cut chances.
With just two minutes on the clock midfielder Jay Isbell failed to connect with a left-wing cross, while Sam Cooper shot just over the bar on 28 minutes.
Danny Zalick had perhaps Blazey’s best chance of the half, firing over Chris Reski’s cross from close range when it looked almost easier to score.
Glynn Hooper’s side did make the breakthrough though before the break when Cooper, fired home from close range after good work down the right by Zalick in the 41st minute.
Whatever was said at half-time by the Blazey management seemed to work as the green and blacks added a further four second half goals to put a certain amount of gloss on the victory.
On grand national day, Blazey were quick out of the blocks after the break and required just four second half minutes to double the lead, Cooper’s pass finding Zalick and after rounding goalkeeper Chris Wearing he slotted home into an empty net.
Seven minutes later it was three as Zalick sent Wearing the wrong way from the penalty spot, after young winger Ashley Piggott had been tripped in the box by former St Blazey defender Wayne Riley.
With Holsworthy all over the place at the back, Blazey were well on top and on 58 minutes they made it four, Danny Brook driving home from 12 yards after the visiting defence had opened up like the red sea.
After three goals in just nine minutes, chances continued to be created by the home side as substitutes Josh Higman, Lewis Ellis and Jon Hoyles all entered the fray.
Zalick’s shot was nearly fumbled into his own net by Wearing, Hoyles had a shot cleared off the line and the pacey Higman drove over the bar from the edge of the area.
The visitors though did gain a conciliation goal, on 67 minutes with a goal which wouldn’t look out of place on a own goals and gaffs DVD.
St Blazey defender Lee Bradd under little pressure attempted a back-pass to goalkeeper Tom Blackler, but with the Blazey stopper out of his goal, the ball gained momentum with Blackler unable to get back and stop it from the crossing the line.
The away side rejuvenated by this conciliation then saw Steve Matthews smash a 30-yard effort against the crossbar, before Blazey re-took control and added a fifth goal, five minutes from time.
It was Zalick again, who was on the mark for the green and blacks, completing his hat-trick when sending his shot from a Higman centre, off the underside off the crossbar.
The green and blacks could have added to their tally late on, defender Fergus Nevin seeing his acrobatic over-head kick cleared off the line, while Zalick had a shot blocked and Higman had the ball in the back of the net, only to be ruled offside.
Blazey will hope to keep up their second half performance tonight, when they host Falmouth Town, kick-off will be at 7.30pm and on Saturday, St Blazey travel to Witheridge, with a 3pm start.
St Blazey (4-4-2): Blackler; Trott, Bradd, Nevin, Kershaw; Piggott, Isbell (Ellis), Brook, Reski (Higman); Cooper (Hoyles) and Zalick.
