PAR’S kitesurfing superstar Denzil Williams went desperately close to claiming victory in the opening round of the British course racing championship, finishing a narrowly beaten second at Watergate Bay.Dorset’s Jason McCaffrey eventually came away with the win after just managing to edge Williams out in the all-important second race, winning by just half a board.
In a closely fought in difficult condition the 15 competitors tried to make the most of the little wind at Watergate and it was another Cornishman who made up the top three, the chairman of the Kernow Kitesurfing club Lee Harvey who finished in third place.
“It was a good start to the year for me, myself and Jason both won a race apiece and because of racing rule that says who ever wins the last race wins the event, I came second,” Williams told the Voice.
“It’s a rule that has worked for me in the past, only last year I managed to win an event on that technicality but this has not proved to be so, maybe it was karma.
“I think that the weekend went well, the forecast wasn’t the best so there wasn’t a great number of entrants, but I’m sure if the weather was a little better then there would have been a lot more people in the competition.”
The three-day event held at Newquay’s Watergate Bay was used to help raise the profile of the British Kite Surfing Assoication which is now officially known as the national governing body for the sports of powerkiting, kitelandboarding, kitebuggying and kitesurfing following recognition by Sport England.
Beautiful weather greeted the competitors from across the country, but the distinct lack of wind didn’t help for good kite surfing conditions.
