Promotion for St Dennis

By Gareth Rowett 11th May 2011

ST DENNIS will be playing their football in the South West Peninsula League next season after their promotion was confirmed with a win at the weekend.
Their 5-2 success away at Morwenstow means that it is now mathematically impossible for promotion rivals Sticker to finish above the Saints and with a top two place in the table also confirmed the club are set for their fourth straight promotion.
They can now to look forward to joining the Peninsula League’s Division One West, where they will lock horns with Clay Country rivals Foxhole Stars, as well as looking forward to trips to Callington, Newquay and Penryn Athletic.
Speaking after the club’s win against Morwenstow a delighted manager Dave Rickard said: “It’s what we’ve all been looking for all season long, it was our ambition to gain promotion at the start of the season and now that it has been confirmed we are all delighted.
“We started in Duchy Division One and have come up through the league and now we are going to be playing at a really good standard which I’m sure will delight all of our players.
“We’ve got the basics here, we’ve already got a good side but we know that we will have a lot of work to do in pre-season to make sure that we are ready to step up to the next level.”
The Saints still have hopes of clinching the league title and know that if they can beat Bodmin Town and Morwenstow in their final two games then they will be confirmed as champions.
It’s been a great season for the club having already secured the Rowett Insurance East Cornwall League Cup, while the club’s reserve side have also gained promotion from the Duchy Division Two after finishing runners-up to St Austell reserves.
Rickard went on to add: “It’s four promotion in a row now. It’s a great achievement. We’ve come a long way through the years and it’s great to do it with all local lads too.”
St Dennis’ ground was approved by the South West Peninsula League back in April and their successful promotion to the South West Peninsula League is due to be announced later this week after the league met for their regular board meeting on Monday night.
This past week former St Stephen manager Roger Green has joined the management set-up and will give a helping hand to Rickard over the coming months.
