Road closure as replacement of railway bridge set to start
Work is set to start on the removal and replacement of the railway bridge on the main road through Trewoon. It is expected that the road will be closed for nine days from tomorrow

The main road through Trewoon is closed for nine days while work is carried out to remove and replace the railway bridgeThe road closure on the A3058 will start from Thursday, February 25 for nine days.

Network Rail previously told residents: “We will shortly be carrying out essential maintenance work on the railway in your area. The railway bridge in Trewoon has reached the end of its life and needs replacing. Work will involve the replacement of the rail bridge located on the A3058.
“The main work will take place from March 1 through to March 6, 2021.

“To allow us to carry out this work successfully we will need to do some preparation work. This will be done mainly during the daytime Monday to Friday, however there will also be some preparation work which needs to take place at the weekends.”

Due to the road closure, a revised bus service will operate on routes 21, 22, 25, and 428 on Mondays to Saturdays.

There will be a reduced level of service through Trewoon maintained on service 25 throughout the day with some existing journeys on services 21 and 22 at peak times routed via Trevanion Road and Trevanion Hill.

Stopping arrangements in Trewoon will be revised.

The stop outside the Premier Store and the bus shelter opposite will be inaccessible so passengers are advised to use the stops on either side of the village outside the White Pyramid or by the St Mewan Lane junction.

From Monday to Saturday, Go Cornwall Bus services 21 and 22 will be diverted between St Austell and St Dennis with the exception of a small number of early morning and evening journeys.

The Go Cornwall Bus 25 will operate to revised times between Newquay and St Austell with buses generally leaving Newquay earlier and arriving later than normal.
Times between St Austell and Fowey will be unchanged.
An additional service - 721 - will assist passengers travelling from Trewoon, High Street and

Foxhole towards St Dennis, Indian Queens, St Columb Minor and Truro.
Service 428 will not operate via Trewoon.
On Sunday services will operate a normal route following the diversion through Trevanion Road and Trevanion Hill in Trewoon.

In May last year the Voice revealed that Network Rail had submitted plans to Cornwall Council Network Rail for the existing underbridge on Westbridge Road to be reconstructed.
The application said the reconstruction of the structure was necessary, adding: “Refurbishment was considered, but discounted due to the level of steel corrosion.
“Refurbishment would have taken a considerable amount of time to complete resulting in considerable cost to the taxpayer, and the lines closure during the works.

“The refurbishment life would have been less than a replacement and would have incurred higher maintenance costs.”

The bridge carries the two tracks of the Paddington to Penzance main line over the A3058.
Network Rail said the footbridge structure held “minimal architectural and historic interest with no archaeological or artistic interest.”

The bridge is not listed or within a conservation area. The application said some repair work would also be made to the substructure.
