Nanpean kept their 100 per cent North Cornwall District League record intact on Saturday with a thrilling 6-5 win over local rivals Lanivet Inn.
Both teams came into this eagerly anticipated Vitoria Bottoms clash with a win in their previous encounters. Last time out, Rovers thrashed St Minver 6-2 while the Pandas had edged past St Breward 2-1.
Prior to kick-off, a glance at the two respective team sheets gave an indication that goals could be in plentiful supply as the hosts named prolific marksman Jordi Wilmott in their line-up, while Lanivet selected former Foxhole and Mevagissey forward Benn Bould, alongside dual-registered Bodmin Town poacher Dan Jennings.
The pre-match predictions of a goal-fest didn’t fail to deliver either as a topsy-turvy clash, that had just about everything, ensued. Nanpean led early on through Jay Davie’s strike, but by half-time, the Pandas, managed by former Foxhole chief Shaun German, led 3-2.
The pendulum swung back and forth with Nanpean eventually prevailing 6-5 thanks to Owen Rosevear’s winner as time ticked down.
Along with Rosevear and Davie, Scott Brown and Willmott (2) found the mark for Rovers. In reply for Lanivet, Bould plundered a fine treble, along with single strikes from Jennings and Chris Brown.
There was also friendly action on Saturday involving our Duchy League clubs as Biscovey defeated Tregrehan Mills 2-0 at Park Track thanks to a brace from striker Joe Gronwalt.
Mevagissey kept up their winning streak since the restart with a 4-0 home win over Foxhole Stars reserves - with the latter hoping to rejoin the Duchy League next term. Tom Rawlings bagged a brace for Meva with their tally completed by Harry Prynn and Tom Rawlings.
Elsewhere, in the St Piran League Cup, Sticker reserves were well beaten 9-0 by Polperro. The visitors were victorious thanks to goals from Jake Thomas (2), Jayden Gilbert (2), Sam Lane, Cam Patterson, Rob Spencer and Jed Whitebrook.
There was better news for AFC St Austell reserves as they were 5-2 winners on the road at Lanreath.
Dave Lea’s men were indebted to a penalty save early on from their stopper Billy Slinn and they duly went ahead on 23 minutes when Cam Hutchison fired home.
The lead was short lived, but after a tactical reshuffle Tyler Cheshire scored a quick-fire treble to put Town 4-1 ahead at the interval. After the break, visiting substitute Zack O’Connor scored a fifth for his side before Lanreath scored again late on.
